In the city of Monsey, New York, on June 6, 2021, a special council of Sephardic Rabbis was held where Chief Rabbi Aaron Lankry appointed Mr. José “Yosef” Bienvenido Cohén from the Dominican Republic as the first Gran Rabino (Chief Rabbi) or head of Sephardic Rabbis of the Dominican Republic.


 Mr. Cohén will represent Sephardic Jews in the Dominican Republic and will be in charge of assisting the descendants of Jews to return to their ancestral roots through conversions and / or return, in addition to assisting in the Kashrut certification of Dominican kosher products for the export.

It is the first time in the history of the Dominican Republic that a Sephardic Orthodox Rabbi is appointed to represent that community and the first time that the appointed is a native Dominican of Jewish origin, an officer of the Army of the Dominican Republic and a descendant of persecuted Jewish Anousim. by the inquisition.
