THE MITZVA TO DWELL IN THE LAND

PARSHAT ERETZ ZAVAT CHALAV U'DIVASH

THE HOLYLAND

דברים פרק יא

PRAYER BEFORE RECITING THE PARASHAT OF ERETZ ZAVAT CHALAV U'DIVASH

IT IS A COMMANDMENT OF THE TORAH TO MOVE TO THE LAND OF ISRAEL

THIS PARAGRAPH BY RAV BERLAND BEFORE THE PRAYER THAT PRECEDES THE READING IS FOR THOSE WHO ALREADY LIVE IN JERUSALEM IN THE DAYS OR YEARS OF THE CHEBLEI MASHIACH (TIME OF GREAT DECREES FROM HEAVEN CONCERNING THE JEWS, KNOWN AS THE BIRTH PAINS OF THE MESSIAH).

It is a mitzvah of Oraita (a mitzvah derived directly from the Torah) to live in Eretz Yisrael.

Yes, gentlemen, it is a mitzvah of Oraita. And living in Jerusalem is also a mitzvah of Oraita. We must know that, apart from residing in Jerusalem, it is forbidden to take up residence elsewhere (in these times). Even if we go out to raise funds (money), we must immediately return to our residences in Jerusalem.

It is forbidden to spend even one night outside of Jerusalem (in these difficult days). And thus, everything can be sweetened, in this way all the harsh decreed judgments will be sweetened.

It is written that the Tamid (dawn offering) of Shachar (dawn) atones for the sins of the night. [And the tamid of] Arvit (dusk) atones for the sins of the day.

However, the Akedá is a Kapará to (spy on) everything.

A PRAYER TO OBTAIN THE MERIT OF MAKING ALYA AND LIVING IN ERETZ ISRAEL

Ribono Shel Olam, Kol Yachol, grant me the merit of fulfilling the mitzvah of ascending to live in Eretz Yisrael. Help me to always fulfill the parameters of the eternal Brit (the Holy Covenant) that you made with Abraham Avinu. Help me to guard my eyes, to purify myself at all times. Help me to always walk after You. May I not walk after my heart, nor after my eyes. May I not prostitute myself with the gates of my face, nor with the Mahashevot of my heart.

And in this merit, may I fulfill the mitzvah of ascending to live in the Land (of Israel), and with the sanctity of the covenant, may I have the merit of lengthening my days in the Land. May the verse that says "Go Yisrvu Yimechem, Viyemei Beneichem Al Adama" be fulfilled in me! May I always serve you in the best way possible, may I always study Torah, may I always display Gemilut Chasadim, may I help the Gerim, the orphan, the widow, may I cling to you, may I always walk in your paths!

And that in Merit of that and of the Tzadik Yesod Olam I may enter with my body into Gan Eden.

THE PARASHAT OF ERETZ ZAVAT CHALAV U'DIVASH

Deut 11:10-32

Blessings of the Promised Land

8 Therefore, keep all the mitzvot (the commandments) that I command you today, so that you may be strong and go in and possess the land that you are crossing over to take;

9 and so that your days may be long in the land that the Eternal swore to their fathers to give to them and their descendants, Eretz Zavat Chalav U Divash (a land flowing with milk and honey).

10 The land you are entering to possess is not like the land of Egypt from which you came, where you sowed your seed and watered it with your foot, like a garden of vegetables. 11 The land you are crossing over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, a land that drinks water from the rain of heaven.

12 It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end. 13 If you carefully obey my commandments that I command you today, to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 I will give you rain for your land in season, early and late, and you will gather in your grain, your new wine, and your oil. 15 I will also give you grass in your field for your livestock, and you will eat and be satisfied.

WARNING TO REMAIN IN THE LAND

16 Take heed therefore, lest your heart be deceived, lest you turn away, lest you serve other gods, and lest you bow down to them: 17 Beware lest the wrath of the LORD be kindled against you, and lest he shut up the heavens, and lest there be continual rain, that the land may yield its fruit. Take heed lest you perish soon from the good land which the LORD is giving you.

18 Therefore they shall take these words of mine to heart and soul, and bind them as a sign on their hand, and they shall be frontlets between their eyes. 19 And they shall teach them to their children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up, 20 and they shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,

MAY YOUR DAYS BE PROLONGED ON THE GOOD LAND!

21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as many as the days of the heavens are above the earth. 22 For if you diligently keep all these mitzvot (commandments) that I command you to do, and if you love the Lord your God, walking in all His ways and holding fast to Him, 23 The Lord will also drive out all these nations from before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves.

24 Every place where you set your foot will be yours; from the desert to Lebanon, from the River Euphrates to the western sea, will be your territory. 25 No one will be able to stand before you; the fear and dread of you will the Lord your God put on all the land where you tread, as He has promised you. 26 Behold, I set before you today a blessing and a curse:

27 A blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God that I command you today, 28 and a curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God and turn aside from the way I command you today, to follow other gods that you have not known. 29 And when the Lord your God brings you into the land you are going to possess, you shall put the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal, 30 which are beyond the Jordan, on the way west, in the land of the Canaanites, who live in the Arabah opposite Gilgal, by the oaks of Moreh.

31 For you are crossing the Jordan to go and possess the land that the Lord your God is giving you. and they shall take it and dwell therein. 32 They shall be careful to observe all the statutes and decrees which I set before you today.

PARSHAT HA'MAKÓM (YERUSHALAYÍM)

THE UNIQUE SANCTUARY

Deut 12:1-32

1 These are the statutes and decrees that you shall be careful to observe in the land which the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess, all the days that you live in the land. 2 You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills, and under every green tree. 3 You shall tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, and burn their Asherah poles with fire. You shall destroy the carved images of their gods and destroy their name from that Makom (place). 4 However, you shall not do so to the Lord your God,

5 but the Makom (place) which the Lord your God chooses out of all your tribes, there to place His name for His dwelling (to place His Shekhinah), that place you shall seek, and there you shall go. 6 And there you shall bring your Korbanot, your sacrifices, your Maaserot (tithes), and the Olah (heave offering) of your hand, your Nedarim (vows), your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and flocks;

7 and you shall eat there before the Lord your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your households, in all the work of your hands in which the Lord your God has blessed you. 8 You shall not do things like all that we are doing here now, each one doing what is right in his own eyes, 9 for as yet you have not entered the rest (the Menucha) and the inheritance that the Lord your God is giving you. 10 But you shall cross the Jordan and dwell in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to inherit; and He will give you rest from all your enemies around you, and you shall dwell safely.

YOU WILL SPILL THE BLOOD, THE NEFESH ON THE MISBEAJ (THE ALTAR) OF THE BEIT HA'MIKDASH

11 And to the place which the LORD your God chooses to put his Name, there you shall bring all that I command you: your Korbanot, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hands, and all the choice vows which you have vowed to the LORD. 12 And you shall rejoice there before the LORD your God, you, your sons, your daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levite who is within your gates; for he has no portion or inheritance with you.

13 Be careful not to offer your Korbanot (burnt offerings) in any Makom (place) you see; 14 but in the Makom (place) which the Eternal chooses, in one of your tribes, there you shall offer your Korbanot (burnt offerings), and there you shall do all that I command you.

15 Nevertheless, you may kill and eat meat in all your towns according to your desire, according to the blessing that the Eternal your God has given you. The Tameh and the Tahor (the unclean and the clean) may eat it, like the flesh of a deer (gazelle or stag). 16 Only they shall not eat blood; they shall pour it out on the earth like water.

17 You shall not eat in your towns the tithe of your grain, your wine, or your oil, nor the firstlings of your herds or flocks, nor the vows you vow, nor the freewill offerings or the heave offerings of your hand.

18 But you shall eat them before the Lord your God in the place that the Lord your God chooses—you, your son, your daughter, your male and female servants, and the Levite who lives within your towns. You shall rejoice before the Lord your God in all the work of your hands. 19 Be careful not to forsake the Levite all your days in the land. 20 When the Lord your God enlarges your territory, as He has promised you, and you say, 'I will eat meat,' because you desired to eat it, you may eat whatever you desired.

21 If the Makom (place) that the Eternal your God chooses to put His Name there is far from you, you may kill some of your cattle and sheep that the Eternal has given you, as I have commanded you, and you may eat within your gates whatever you wish.

22 You may eat them as venison is eaten, gazelle and deer; the Tame and the Tahor (the unclean and the ritually clean) may also eat them. 23 Only you must be firm in not eating the blood; for the blood is the Nefesh (it is the Soul), and you shall not eat the soul with its flesh. 24 You shall not eat it; you shall pour it (the soul / the blood) on the ground like water. 25 You shall not eat it (the soul), so that it may go well with you and your children after you, when you do what is right in the sight of the Eternal.

26 But the things which you have consecrated, and your Nedarim, the vows, you shall take, and bring them with you to the place which the Lord has chosen; 27 and you shall offer your Korbanot, the flesh and the blood, on the altar of the Lord your God; and the blood of your Korbanot shall be poured out on the altar of the Lord your God, and you may eat the flesh. 28 Keep and listen to all these words that I command you, so that by doing what is good and right in the sight of the Lord your God, it may go well with you and with your children after you forever.

WARNING AGAINST THE AVODAH ZARAH

29 When the Lord your God has destroyed the nations from before you, where you are going to possess them, and you have dispossessed them and settled in their land, 30 be careful that you do not become ensnared by following them after they have been destroyed from before you. Do not ask about their gods, saying, ‘Just as those nations served their gods, so will I also serve them.’ 31 You shall not do this to the Lord your God, for every abominable thing the Lord hates, they have done to their gods; for they even burned their sons and their daughters in the fire to their gods. 32 You shall be careful to do everything I command you; you shall not add to it or take away from it.
